About Spatial Media, its main projects, and its author.

Spatial Media is an open knowledge and project site about technologies that create, capture, process, and display three-dimensional media.

The site brings together practical production workflows, technical explanations, research notes, and reusable reference material. Its subjects include stereoscopic video, VR180, digital holography, computational imaging, spatial displays, and immersive media production.

Spatial Media is designed as a growing knowledge base rather than a collection of isolated posts. Articles are organized by category, connected to shared concept definitions, and supported by an automatically generated glossary.

Main projects

The main subject projects are digital holography using consumer color and depth data, and VR180 production for immersive platforms such as Apple Vision Pro and YouTube. The site also covers practical stereoscopic workflows, including camera alignment, MVC video conversion, and subtitle preparation. Its event history includes the restored 3D KIFF — Korea International 3D Film Festival Archive, preserving programmes, awards, and photographs from a long-running meeting place for stereoscopic filmmakers and audiences.

About the author

Alaric Hamacher is a director and cinematographer working with immersive and spatial media. His practice combines film production, research, software development, and technical education.

In 2016, his work on Nepal received a Lumiere Award. He was the founder and manager of Virtual Experience, a former production company for stereoscopic, immersive, and spatial-media projects.

He is affiliated with the Department of Immersive Convergent Content at Kwangwoon University in Seoul, South Korea. He is a member of the International Stereoscopic Union (ISU) and the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), and is a Blackmagic Design Certified DaVinci Resolve Trainer, listed through Blackmagic Design’s Korean training and certified trainer directory.

His work represented on this site includes stereoscopic filmmaking, VR180 production, computational imaging, digital holography, and the development of tools for spatial-media workflows.

Spatial Media is intended to make that work understandable and reusable: to document not only finished results, but also the concepts, methods, and technical decisions behind them.

Purpose of the site

This site has three goals:

  1. Document practical workflows that can be reproduced and improved.
  2. Explain underlying concepts without separating theory from application.
  3. Build an open reference that grows as spatial-media technologies evolve.

The material is a work in progress. Articles and concept pages will continue to be expanded, corrected, and connected as the project develops.
